Help with the emotional symptoms of perimenopause and menopause as part of your plan.

Anxiety, depression, anger, and fatigue are common experiences during menopause, often interconnected and influenced by hormonal changes. Here's a summary of their definitions and connections to menopause:

Anxiety: How do hormonal changes during menopause contribute to anxiety?

Anxiety is characterized by excessive worry, fear, and unease. During perimenopause and menopause:

  • Risk increases significantly in perimenopause, the 4-7 years leading up to menopause

  • 40-50% of women experience increased anxiety

  • Hormonal fluctuations, particularly estrogen and progesterone, affect mood regulation

  • Can manifest as generalized anxiety, panic attacks, or amplified worry

  • Sleep disturbances and mood swings may exacerbate symptoms.

Depression: How does menopause affect depression?

Depression involves persistent low mood, sadness, and loss of interest in activities. In perimenopause and menopause:

  • Women are 40% more likely to experience depressive moods

  • Risk is higher during perimenopause

  • Hormonal changes affect serotonin levels in the brain

  • Symptoms may include irritability, sleep issues, and concentration problems.

Anger: Does menopause make you angry?

Increased irritability and anger are common during perimenopause and menopause:

  • Often manifests as mood swings or increased irritability

  • Can be more intense during perimenopause

  • May be exacerbated by other perimenopausal symptoms like sleep disturbances.

Fatigue: What causes fatigue during menopause?

Fatigue is a common complaint during perimenopause and menopause:

  • Often linked to sleep disturbances, such as night sweats

  • Can contribute to mood changes and cognitive issues ("brain fog")

  • May be intensified by other menopausal symptoms.

Connection to Menopause

These emotional and physical symptoms are interconnected and often stem from:

  • Hormonal fluctuations: Especially changes in estrogen levels

  • Sleep disturbances: Night sweats and insomnia can worsen mood and fatigue

  • Physical changes: Hot flashes and other symptoms can increase stress and anxiety

  • Life circumstances: Midlife stressors can compound menopausal symptoms.

It's important to note that while these symptoms are common, persistent or severe cases should be discussed with a healthcare provider. Treatment options may include hormone therapy, lifestyle changes, psychotherapy, and in some cases, medication.
