What is perimenopause and menopause?

Perimenopause is the transitional phase before menopause, typically lasing 4-8 years and marked by erratic estrogen levels, declining progesterone and testosterone. All hormones that can cause symptoms like irregular periods, hot flushes, low energy, and mood changes. Menopause itself occurs when a woman hasn’t had a period for 12 months, typically between ages 45 and 55.

Many women find this stage of life challenging, often struggling to recognise or manage symptoms. This can make daily life feel overwhelming. While GPs are often the first point of contact for health concerns, menopause has historically received limited focus in medical training. As a result, some women may feel their symptoms are not fully understood or addressed.

The good news is that there are effective medical and psychological treatments available to ease symptoms like insomnia, anxiety, and hot flushes. With the right support and care, this transition can become more manageable and less isolating. You don’t have to navigate it alone—help is here.

  • Only 1 in 5 women seek help for menopause
